A dorresnondent sends us the fol lowing receipt, which, in our present condition, will be universally useful. Oil of e?ery kind ia very scarce, in fact can hardly be obtained at all, and candles too are too high priced for frco use- Let every family provide its own light, which can, be done if this receipt is observed, at a greatly reduced expense: . ' - Take a half pound of alum and saltpetre, pul verise coarsely, pour on it a quart of boiling wa ter; take from twelve to twenty pounds of tallow, according to its firmness. The former quantity for the oily tallow we get from the fat beef in the summer, or for lard, and the latter for tallow that will stand in a cake: put it in an iron vessel near the fire, and when melted, stir in the dissolved alum and saltpetre, and boil until the water is ex pelled from the tallow Have wicka made rather smaller and of finer thread than usual for home made candles and when perfectly dry mould the caudles in the usual way. If any one, after giv ing this receipt a trial, goes in darkness, it is be eause their deeds are evil. Iredell Ejcpretu. . A. II. An Exacting Husband.- Wycherly, the co median, married a young girl of eighteen when he was verging on eighty. Shortly after, Provi dence was pleased, in its mercy to the young wo- man, to call the old man to another and better world. But ere he took his final departure from this, he summoned his young wile to his bedside, and announced to her that he was dying; where- -upon she wept bitterly. Wycherly lilted himself up in his bed, and gazing with tender emotions on his young ana weeping wue, eaia: viy dear est love, I have a solemn promise to exact' from', you before I quit you forever here below. . Will you assure me my wishes shall be attended uo by you, however great the sacrifice you may he call ed on to make" Horrid ideas of suttees, of poor Indian widows being called on to expire on iuue ral pyres with the bodiea of their deceased' lords and masters, flashed across the brain of the poor young woman. With a convulsive effort and desperate resolu tion, .old Wycherly 's young wife gasped out au assurance that his "commands,, however dreadful they might be, should be obeyed. ' Then Wych erly, with a ghastly smile, said, iu a low aud so- lemn voice, 'My beloved wile, the parting re quest I have to make of you is that wbeu i am gone (here the poor woman sobbed and cried . most vehemently) when 1 am in my cold grave (Mrs. Wycherly tore her huir)- when i am ' laid low (the disconsolate wit'u roared with grief) wbeu I am no longer a heavy burden utid a tie ou.you ("O, for Heaven's sake,' exclaimed. Mrs. Wycherly, what am 1 to ox?") I command you, my dear young, wife (said- the, old, dying comedian) on paiu oi incurriu my malediction, never to marry an old mau agaio." Mrs. Wych erly dried her eyes, and, in- the uiost fervent manner, promised that she j)ver would; and that faithful woman kept her word for lite. Ex. Insidunt in Utiky.
